Principal’’s Report

2023

This time last year I was reflecting on Covid and the impact it had on school life for such a substantial period of time. This year, although we have had times when there were a high number of individual cases, the impact on school life has been negligible.

The consequences of lockdown and extended periods away from school for many students has had a negative impact. It has impacted students' learning, their social skills and as educators we are seeing higher levels of anxiety, not just among students, but in our community. However, we quickly forget. This year when discussing the Boorowa Netball and Touch Carnival we were wondering why there were so many questions when we attend every year and students should know what happens. It was then we realised that it had not been held for three years due to Covid restrictions for two years and last year due to flooding. Having put Covid behind us we ran a full program of activities at St Mary’s. The highlight of which was the school play ‘Animal Utopia’. This was performed four times over three days. The sense of pride and excitement the performances generated was tangible. All classes were involved with our senior students taking on the major roles. All did a wonderful job supporting one another and working with the staff to pull the play together. Like the Boorowa Touch and Netball Carnival we were able to again host the St Mary’s Soccer Carnival after a hiatus of three years. It had a small number of schools attending however we hope to build upon this in years to come. The Community Council are to be congratulated on their organisation of the day. Excursions were back in full swing. Our senior students went on overnight excursions with Years Five and Six travelling to Bathurst to learn about gold and the impact of its discovery on the local area and Australia. Year Four travelled to Dubbo where they camped in tents overnight at Dubbo Zoo. Other classes had day excursions as far afield as Canberra.

Principal’’s Report

2023

Many lunchtime activities were offered to students with lunchtime art, gardening, Minecraft club, choir and chess. Our choir travelled to ‘Big Sing’ in Canberra and joined

choirs from school across Canberra for a fun day of singing and performing. On the way home they did a flash mob at McDonalds in Yass which was a bit different. They then travelled to West Wyalong where

they took second place in the Western Region Choral Festival. Our chess players participated in two competitions in Canberra which they enjoyed and learnt a great deal. They also competed in our one day school championships. Public speaking this year saw all students from years three to six take part in the school competition. From that, several students from each year level went on to compete at Western Region and archdiocesan level. This year I had the opportunity to see many of the speakers at all levels and was impressed by their confidence and skill. Our students should be proud of their efforts. We certainly were. Sport certainly plays a large role in school life with school carnivals, representative pathways and gala days for a number of sports keeping our sports coordinator very busy. We had many students represent our school at regional carnivals with a number going through the representative pathways to be able to participate in state carnivals. A wonderful achievement for these students. It was encouraging to see students participating in carnivals and also trying sports they may not have played before at gala days. The religious life of the school is a critical at St Mary's. The school is supported in this by the parish sacramental team along with Fr Jiss. They have assisted our REC and the classroom teachers to prepare students in Year Four and Year Six for the reception of the sacraments. Fr Jiss has been a regular visitor to the school where he has celebrated both year level and whole school masses. I thank the parish and Fr Jiss for their on-going support. Our academic results as measured by standardised tests including NAPLAN show that our students are performing very strongly, both at a local, state and national level. The results for all schools are available at https://www.myschool.edu.au/ The results for the 2023 school year will not be loaded until 2024.

Principal’’s Report

2023

The focus on direct instruction in Literacy through Spelling Mastery and InitiLit has seen solid growth for all students which we

hope to continue to build upon. Next year one area of focus is the rapid recall of maths facts which includes, but is not limited to, ‘times tables’. This year we introduced the Young Leaders Program for our Year Six students. The program saw leadership days run by the Museum of Australian Democracy as well as skill development which saw all students undergo water safety and first aid training. The most significant focus was having students engage in community service which is one of St Mary’s core values. This saw students engage in activities inside the school gate, outside the school gate yet organised by the school and volunteer at community events they organise. Depending on the number of volunteer hours they completed and the category they were in they would qualify for bronze, silver or gold certificates. At the end of the program, mid way through term four, the students had volunteered for a total of 392 hours within the school, 238 hours outside the school gates organised by the school and 265 volunteer hours organised by themselves. This is an outstanding result and allows our students to model faith in action. All of what I have mentioned is the result of hard work, dedication and through people's generosity in giving up their time. I thank all parents for the support they give to St Mary’s at the particular events and programs mentioned above. I also thank all staff members for their contribution to the life of the school and their willingness to take on extra activities to make life so much richer for our students. We should all be proud of St Mary's and the education it provides for the students of Young and the surrounding area. To the school executive and the Community Council who support me in my role as principal, I thank you for your hard work, your support and generosity. Finally, this year Mrs Jeanette Albert resigned her position at St Mary’s for health reasons. Jeanette spent the majority of her teaching career at St Mary’s and would have interacted with hundreds of students during that time. They will remember her passion for literature, the relationships she developed with them and their families, and her unflappable nature. On behalf of the community I thank Jeanette for her many years in Catholic education and wish her well in her retirement and hope she experiences improved health.

Community Council Report

The end of the 2023 school year will see the departure of three members of the St Mary’s Community Council. These members are Elecia Anderson, Nathan Robinson and Emma McRae, all of whom have made significant contributions to St Mary’s. We thank them for their service and look forward to welcoming new members to the council in 2024. Money raised through fundraising, organised by the community council, has seen many sets of new readers purchased for the school as well as the installation of new air-conditioners in the Year Six classrooms. I am sure these will be appreciated by the students this coming Summer. Our first major fundraiser was the soccer carnival hosted by St Mary’s. As a consequence of Covid lockdowns this had not been held for several years so the participation rates were down. We hope to build this up over the next few years. The second was the pie drive organised through ‘Wilders’ which had a very positive response.

The community council thanks all the parents who supported our initiatives and look forward to your continued support next year.

A new model for the community council, introduced by Catholic Education, to begin in 2024 sees every parent/carer of a child at St Mary’s automatically become a member of the community council. There will now be an elected executive who will work with the school executive to continually improve our school. There will also be a number of sub-committees examining various aspects of life at St Mary's. More information will be shared with families next year.

On behalf of the community council I wish everyone a merry and restful Christmas.

Magdalena Wright KMW

This year, across our archdiocese, we celebrated the theme “ Walking Together ”. When we journey together, we are walking in synodality. Synod comes from the Greek syn and odos (meaning “ with ” and “ path ”) and refers to a way of living or working to gether. Throughout the school year, we walked as a community in synodality, believing that together, we could create the Kingdom of God here in our own school. 2023 saw a new Sacramental program introduced into our school where Year 3 prepared for Reconciliation, Year 4 prepared for First Eucharist and Year 6 prepared for Confirmation. The teachers did a wonderful job in preparing each of the students and the celebration of each sacrament was very special. It was delightful having all of the students prepare for and support their peers who made each sacrament. The year saw another strong round of fundraising take place, with Caritas' Project Compassion, Vinnies Winter Appeal, the Catholic Mission Fair Day and the Vinnies Christmas Appeal all raising much needed funds and resources to support the vulnerable and needy, here in our local community and further abroad. We thank our students and their families for always supporting each of these events and making a difference in the lives of others. We were fortunate to have David Enever attend our school to celebrate Easter with us through a concert. We were also treated to a wonderful performance during the year celebrating the love of God.

We continued to pray as a school community each Monday morning with each class leading us in a Prayer Service each term. We also had the opportunity to celebrate mass, both at a grade level and as a community. Our opening school mass saw us welcome our new leaders and celebrate our school theme. Then we were blessed to celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and a special mass celebrating our Presentation history in conjunction with Hennessy Catholic College. Of course the year wrapped up with a heartfelt mass farewelling our Year 6 students. 2023 saw new retreat days introduced for Years 4, 5 and 6. These were led by the CYSMA team at Hennessy Catholic College and were hugely successful, with all students walking away with a greater appreciation of their own spiritual journey. There were opportunities to engage with St Mary ’ s Parish as we served morning tea for the parishioners after mass, we helped to celebrate the Young Community Spring Fair with a perfor mance, our Year 6 students cleaned the church as part of their community service and our staff and students would help to lead weekend masses. We thank Fr Jiss for his ongoing support of the school. 2023 saw endless opportunities for us to celebrate our faith throughout the school as we walked together as a community. I ’ d like to thank everyone who came on the journey with us and we look forward to the spiritual journey that awaits us in 2024!

School Captain ’ s Report 2023 has been a one-of-a-kind year! We have had carnivals, sporting opportunities, Peer Support, Mission Day, whole school rewards and many more fun times! We were fortunate this year for some beautiful weather and no covid restrictions so most of our events were able to go ahead. The excursions were enjoyed by all and they were great fun. We also had our whole school production – Animal Utopia - which was awesome and involved all classes dancing and it brought out confidence and skill in everyone! It was full of inspirational stories and themes like ‘ never give up ’ and ‘ try everything. ’ The production was certainly a major highlight of the year. Peer Support was an adventurous journey for both the Year Six ’ s and the children in each of the groups. We learnt many new and useful skills as well as resilience and how to act in situations that may be troubling. Peer Support was a wonderful time for us in Year 6 because we developed our leadership skills and the confidence to speak in front of a group which helped us build social skills and new friendships and networks in our school. It was both challenging and exhilarating! Our sporting carnivals were fantastic and we saw McGrath and O ’ Dwyer neck and neck all year for first place, but McCarthy and Finnegan certainly gave them a run for their money! It was great to be able to attend all our sporting opportunities once again like NRL Gala Days, Boorowa Touch & Netball Carnival, Rugby 7s, the Soccer Carnival and all the Archdiocesan Sport. It has been a big sporting year! This year we were very excited to be the first year to take on the Young Leaders Program. It was very tough and it unleashed the Leader inside us as Year Sixes. There were three levels – Bronze, Silver & Gold. We all enjoyed striving for gold! In our opinion this program was a great success!! As a year group we enjoyed our excursion to the Bathurst Goldfields. We discovered many interesting facts about the history of early gold panners and even got to try this for ourselves. We also went to Big Splash and enjoyed a beautiful day of swimming and sliding. As captains of our great school, we sought to be the best leaders we could. From greeting visitors to running assemblies and events we did our best to represent our school with pride and passion. We are sad to be leaving but we know that we have done our job as captains and are ready to hand over our positions to next year ’ s captains to take on the role of leading our school for

another great year in 2024! Isaac Wright & Amelia McRae

ABORIGINAL EDUCATION

It has been another busy and eventful year at St Mary's celebrating and showcasing our Aboriginal heritage. We started the year commemorating the National Anniversary of the Apology. The school marked this significant date through a reverent whole school prayer service led by our Year Three students. Throughout the week the students participated in a variety of meaningful and thoughtful activities and created displays around our school. A number of classes explored the significance of the five-petal Native Cotton Desert Rose, or Native Hibiscus as it was chosen to symbolise the scattering of the Stolen Generations and their resilience At St Mary’s we acknowledged Reconciliation Week and explored this year's theme - Be a Voice for Generations. The theme encouraged all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives. At St Mary's we encouraged the children to speak up and continue the work of those before them to bring about change. This year we wanted to amplify the ideas of a generation by sharing their reconciliation messages in a sea of megaphones.

ABORIGINAL EDUCATION

St Mary's commenced their NAIDOC Week Celebrations in Week 3 Term 3 and explored the year’s theme For Our Elders. Students unpacked the idea that across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families. NAIDOC Week festivities culminated in an afternoon Tabloid of Traditional Indigenous games. Our Aboriginal Education Worker, Ms Emma Moorby, continued to work closely with our ATSI students on a number of projects and mentoring sessions. A highlight of the year was sharing with the local community, at the Young Mobile Playgroup’s NAIDOC celebration, how St Mary's learned the Wiradjuri language through the Wiradjuri Word of the Week. We were pleased to announce that Levi Clark was selected to be part of the 2023 Indigenous Reading Project’s - Reading for Life program and Skylar Gunning was selected to be part of the Indigenous Reading Project. One of the most exciting things to happen this year was the selection of four of our students to be awarded Reconciliation Awards by the Archdioceses. Each year the Archdiocese presents Reconciliation awards to those individuals or groups who are judged to have made a significant contribution to Aboriginal Education in their communities and who are excellent role models for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people across the Archdiocese. The following students were recognised in various categories;

Mrs Jade Presser - Classroom Support Teacher Classroom Support After such a busy year, Classroom Support staff were asked: 2023 - What a year it has been!

Seeing the students grow in their mind set as they apply themselves to their work and then beaming with pride as they find success in what they have achieved. I am so proud of them and it brings a tear to my eye everytime!!

The Classroom Support team have had a fantastic year supporting the students in our school - through MiniLit, MacqLit, numeracy groups, Royal Far West speech and OT programs and everything else inbetween.

What is the most rewarding part of working with your students?

Mrs Tammy Terry - Classroom Support Assistant

Mrs Kath Manchester - Classroom Support Assistant “The most rewarding thing is witnessing the students develop confidence with their reading and spelling.”

Mrs Leonie Reeves - Classroom Support Assistant

“I love it when my students apply a concept that we’ve learned to their work. It’s very rewarding to watch them develop into independent learners.”

I have had the incredible opportunity to work with an inspiring group of students in speech and OT. Witnessing their growth, determination, and resilience has left an indelible mark on my heart. Each day, I am filled with immense pride for my little students as I see them overcome challenges and reach their full potential.

Ms Emma Moorby - Aboriginal Education Worker

Miss Emilee Levett - Classroom Support Assistant

Mrs Megan McKnight - Classroom Support Assistant I have enjoyed meeting and building relationships with students as well as seeing them grow and develop in all aspects of school life.

The most rewarding thing about working with the students for me is being able to build a trusting relationship and support the students emotionally. I love being a part of their education journey, watching them develop and grow every day.

I find it rewarding when students in my ATSI group make greater connections with their culture and language and show support for each other.

Country Cross

Kindergarten had a fantastic St Patrick's Day as the morning and early afternoon involved a Bus Safety program, followed by going into the local community to view an Art and Model Train exhibits at the Southern Cross Cinema. NRMA representative Susie, Bus Driver Mr Geoff Hill and Police Officers Karen and James spoke to the Kindergarten students about being safe when on and near a bus. The students were informed to be 2 big dinosaur steps away from the bus when getting ready to board it. The students were taken for a ride on Mr Hill's bus to the railway station where they wore their seatbelts to keep safe. Remaining quiet on a bus so that the bus driver is not distracted is also very important. The students disembarked from the bus at the railway station and viewed the flashing lights at the front and back of the bus.

The Kindergarten students had fruit break at the nearby Anderson Park before walking to the Southern Cross Cinema to view the Portrait art exhibit which all the children entered.

The students also viewed the lovely model trains and replica of the Young railway station which is all to scale, (1:54). Peter and Leo from the Young Railway Interest Group spoke to the children about trains in Young in the 1960s. Trains ran every day. Leo travelled to Armidale from Young on trains which took 27 hours!

Kindergarten returned by foot to Anderson Park to have lunch before walking up the hill in Lynch Street back to school.

It was a great day and it could not have happened without volunteers to ensure the students walked safely whilst out and about in town. Thank you to Mrs Amy Parkes, Mrs Sarah and Mr Will Sullivan and Mr Williams (and his ute for carrying the school bags!) It was a lot of fun and the children had a great day learning about toys from the past and seeing an art exhibition.

Thank you to Leo and Peter from the Railway Interest Group for sharing their love of trains.

We have conquered the mountain this year. We have worked hard to challenge ourselves.

We have overcome obstacles. We have achieved great things.

Now it is time to celebrate our achievements and prepare for the next mountain.

To celebrate and enjoy the 2023 Melbourne Cup festivities, St Mary's held hobby horse races in each class throughout the week. On Thursday, 9 th November, during recess, amongst a little drizzle of rain, the finals were conducted. The last race saw competitors Elissa Batinich, Oliver Parkes, Pippa Harris, Mason Terry, Hannah Jackson, Sam Cartwright, Aggie Murphy, Jono Eastwood, Keaton Bedford, Chloe Buck, Leo Holt and Ivy Murphy ride their hobby horse two times around the bottom oval. It was a fun event.

The winning horse was decided upon from a card drawn out reading 'The Wild One' and this went to Pippa Harris. She accepted the perpetual St Mary's Melbourne Cup trophy with a big smile.

2023 Respect Responsibility Service Bullying, No Way

This year chess was again popular with a large number of students. The year began strongly but was put on hold for the over a term in the middle of the year as the chess room was commandeered as a store room and preparation room for the school play. At the conclusion of the play we were unable to use the room until new storage was constructed in the hall for all the boxes of costumes accumulated over many years. We finally resumed chess several weeks into term four. This year we travelled to Canberra to play in two competitions. The first was the North Canberra/Gungahlin Zone of the ACT Primary School Chess Championships. This was held at Gold Creek School and saw fifteen students participating. For some it was their first tournament and our students enjoyed the experience. We had some outstanding individual results and all players learnt how to be a better player. Mr Hughes then transported twelve girls to the ACT Primary Schools - Girls Championships at Rosary Primary in Watson. Of these, ten had never previously played in a tournament and we had several girls from Year One compete. A relaxed and enjoyable day was had with mixed results. This was an ideal tournament for our first time players to compete in.

In term four we held the St Mary’s Chess Championships with the convenor for the ACT events travelling to Young to run the competition. We had thirty-six competitors all of whom played seven games. At the end of the day the following players were the top ranked players. St Mary’s Chess Championships - Champion - Chanupa Silva St Mary’s Chess Championships - Runner up - Harry Robinson St Mary’s Chess Championships - Third place - Jaxon Wark St Mary’s Chess Championships - Best placed girl - Belle Morris
